Beginner Muay Thai Gear Guide

One of the first questions beginners ask is what gear they need. The honest answer: nothing for your first class. After that, here is what to buy and in what order.

For your first class: nothing

Come in comfortable athletic clothes — shorts and a t-shirt — and train barefoot on the mats. Bring water. We provide what you need to get started, so there is no reason to buy anything before you have tried a class.

First purchase: hand wraps and gloves

Once you decide to keep training, hand wraps and a solid pair of gloves are the first things to own. Wraps protect your wrists and knuckles; a general-purpose 14 oz or 16 oz glove works well for most beginners doing padwork and bag work. Ask a coach before you buy — we will point you to sizing that fits how you train.

Next: shin guards

As you start drilling kicks with a partner, shin guards become the next essential. They protect you and your training partners during controlled drills. Again, there is no rush — you will know when it is time, and we will steer you toward a reliable pair.

Later and optional

Mouthguards are smart once you are drilling more actively. Beyond that, ankle supports, a gym bag, and a second set of wraps are nice-to-haves, not requirements. You do not need a full locker of gear to train well.

The one rule: ask first

Gear is personal, and it is easy to overspend online on the wrong thing. Before any purchase, ask a coach. Start with a free class — book online or text (951) 337-3781 — and we will make sure you get the right gear at the right time.
